What to Expect at a Public Meeting

Public meetings are generally held on the first Thursday of each month at 6:15pm in the Commission Chambers of the Kenton County Government Center (1840 Simon Kenton Way, Second Floor) in Covington. If you are an applicant or adjacent property owner (in the case of a map amendment), you will receive a notification letter prior to the public hearing that states the specific time, date and location of the meeting. This information is also available on the calendar displayed on the home page.

Applicants

When you arrive at the public hearing you will be asked to register as the applicant. You will have a maximum of 30 minutes to speak in favor of your request, however it is not necessary to use the full 30 minutes. If you have additional presentation materials such as photos, graphics or a PowerPoint, please send them to staff at least 10 days prior to the meeting. Materials can be emailed to avidekovich@pdskc.org or delivered on a thumb drive.

Public

If you are interested in the issue being heard before the Planning Commission, you are welcome to offer a testimony at the public hearing. Members of the public are asked to keep all comments to a maximum of five minutes, to allow others time to speak. When you arrive, you will be asked to register to speak as a proponent, opponent or neutral party. Registration is required if you would like to provide testimony, however you can decide later if you would like to speak. If you are a part of a group, consider having a spokesperson speak on your behalf. The group spokesperson will be given twenty minutes to speak on behalf of the group. Public Hearing FAQ

I got a notice in the mail about a public hearing at Planning and Development Services what does this mean?
You received a notice because you own property either in or adjacent to an area that is being proposed for a zone change. The Kenton County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing, offering you an opportunity to provide your input on the proposed change.

When is the public hearing?
Public hearings are typically held on the first Thursday of each month at 6:15pm. The time, date and location of the public hearing is listed on the notification letter you received.

When is my issue going to be heard?
Check the pending items feature on our home page which includes an agenda with the order of issues being heard.

Am I allowed to speak on a matter?
Yes, you can speak as a proponent (for), opponent (against) or neutral party. To do so you must register by signing up at the table in the back of the room at the night of the meeting.

I registered to speak, does this mean I have to?
No, just because you signed up to speak does not require you to do so. You can decide later if you would like to speak.

I am disappointed with the Planning Commission’s decision what can I do about it?
In the case of a map or text amendment, the Planning Commission’s decision is a recommendation that is sent on to local officials in the jurisdiction where the site is located. The local jurisdiction may accept or overturn the Planning Commission’s decision. Follow up with your jurisdiction to see when they will be voting on the matter. The Planning Commission’s action is final in the case of a subdivision or cell tower.
